It does not breathe fire anymore. What rises from its throat now is only smoke — the last warmth of everyone it buried.
“Grief does not die with the ones we loved. It grows scales — and waits on the wall for someone to come home.” — The Chronicle of Aurelen
Before Aurelen burned, the wyrm was the youngest of a brood nested along the mountain’s black spires — taught by its elders to hoard warmth, not gold, and to keep watch over the valley below like family.
The war that ended the old kingdom did not spare the mountain. It came for the brood one by one, until only the youngest remained — too stubborn to die, too grieved to leave.
Centuries later, it still curls at the ruin’s edge each dusk, watching the horizon for a plume of smoke that never comes. Travelers call it monstrous. Scholars call it ash-hearted — not for cruelty, but for a heart that only holds embers now.
It will not leave the mountain. It is the last thing still keeping the promise.
